Horses love to play around but can also get nervous frightened excited and bored which can result in them standing up on their hind legs. The recommendation is that the stable height should be between 9 feet and 11 feet with a minimum roof clearance of 3 feet. In other words nothing should protrude down below 12 feet. A rearing horse can hit his head on a ceiling that is lower than this. As standard we use osb moisture resistant oriented strand board manufactured to bs5669. It is also important that there is adequate clearance between the horse and the roof. Stables should be at least 3 7 m wide and 3 7 m deep.

Ceiling your stable ceiling height should be at least four metres high to allow for rearing from your horse. For extra large horses warmbloods etc a 14 foot ceiling should provide extra safety. A size of 3 7 m x 4 9 m is preferable. For ponies small horses the minimum size should be 8m2 with 2 8m the minimum length of the shorter wall stables for larger horses should be in the range 11m2 20m2 and be as square as is practical stables for foaling should have a minimum.

The roof should provide adequate shelter from the elements including adequate insulation in hot areas. The height of the stable should be 9 11 feet with a minimum of 3ft clearance of the roof so you must also consider the height of the stable and any low beams or light fixtures that could pose a problem. A standard room height of 8ft 2 4m might be fine for ponies and small horses but taller horses will need higher ceilings.

In fact many stables have open truss or rafter construction with no ceiling. Horse barns are commonly built with a ceiling height of 10 to 12 feet with 8 feet being the minimum. Height should be 2 75 m. The opening s position at the eave 10 to 12 feet above the floor allows the incoming cold air to be mixed and tempered a bit with stable air before reaching the horse.

Ceiling height should allow the horse to raise its head comfortably without worrying about hitting the ceiling.
