Lay the first strip of material so that it overhangs the drip edges of your roof by about a quarter inch. This reduces the chances of wrinkles after the roofing is installed. Nail the roofing in place with short roofing nails spaced 6 inches apart and 1 inch in from the outer edges of the roll roofing. The piece should overlap the lower course by at least 4 inches.

To seal a plumbing vent spread roofing cement around the pipe. Don t put nails any closer to the edge of the roof than 1 inch. Cut a hole in the roll roofing and slip it over as well. Prepare a valley between joined roofs by cutting a strip that is 18 inches wide and covers the entire length of the valley.

Add a second piece of full width roll roofing over the first. Do not use the eaves as a guide instead because they can be uneven. Measure 35 inches up from the eaves at several intervals along the roof and mark them. Then apply roofing cement evenly around the roof edges where these strips are going to go.

Be careful not to get any on your skin in this process. Step 3 apply the edge strips. Snap a chalk line as a guide for the first layer roofing. Overlap the next strip of roofing material with the first by at least 4 inches.
